Liz Sumner’s work concerns itself with colour, light, contrast and the body in space.

From early days while indulging in creative pursuits, the visual arts, dance and theatre, Liz graduated and was employed as an Educational Psychologist.

Continuing to develop her drawing and painting skills, for years she worked part time, taking days and holidays to be taught by professional artists and tutors. She concentrated on drawing and painting in the Life Studio, exploring the joys of charcoal and oil paint.

In 2010, Liz attended the Glasgow School of Art in the Department of Sculpture and Environmental Art, graduating in 2014.

The main thrust of her final year work was a video piece, a collaboration with a photographer and three yoga friends, exploring rhythm, movement and the use of space in and outside four life size boxes. This work was inspired by Liz’s love of dance and her yoga practice.

Pursuing her exploration of movement and the body in space, the GSA’s Phoenix Bursary year of 2015 saw Liz returning to her first love of figurative painting, albeit on a grand scale; a large black wall hanging, (3mtrs x 2mtrs), painted with dancing women and getting out the sewing machine, a flowing black hand painted dress for her model, Madeleine Brown.

Continuing to explore ideas and possibilities in painting and photography, Liz works from a dedicated studio in her Glasgow home.
